Calor the Toast of Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries

In the drinks industry there are few things which chill the imagination more than a pub without beer – which is why Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries plc relies on Calor to power its fleet of Yale liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), forklift trucks.
Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, the UK’s largest independent brewer, has production and distribution operations in Burton on Trent, Mansfield, Hull, St Helens, Cockermouth, Hoddesdon and Eaglescliffe as well as Wolverhampton. They brew some of the UK’s leading ale brands including Marston’s Pedigree, Marston Bitter, Banks’s Original, Banks’s Bitter, Mansfield Bitter, Cumberland Ale and Jennings Bitter.
Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of LPG, powers a fleet of 25 Yale forklift trucks which are primarily used to load and unload transfer vehicles running between the brewery’s sites.

Calor provides complete confidence

Chris Evans, Group Logistics Manager highlights the importance of the trucks’ reliable performance. "Security of supply is of paramount importance in the brewing trade," he says. "Working with two industry leaders, Calor and Yale, gives us complete confidence that our distribution will be kept fully operational."
Previously, Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries had a mixed fleet of forklift trucks powered by electric and diesel. The electric machines were predominantly used within production or warehouse areas where a clean power source is required, while the diesel trucks were used for external operations.
Neither of the two fuels provided an ideal solution for the brewery, as Chris Evans points out: "To replace the ageing electric fleet we would have had to buy double the amount of trucks than we actually needed, or at the very least additional batteries. While machines were working, another similar number would have to be on charge for the next eight-hour shift.

Reduced Refuelling Time

"When the diesel trucks were being used in confined areas, the fumes and emissions were too high, which raised many Health and Safety concerns," he adds.
Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries opted for a fleet of Calor, LPG powered Yale trucks. The machines are fitted with a three-way catalytic converter, which reduces emissions and allows the forklift trucks to work safely in the confined areas such as the kegging plant. "LPG was ideal for this environment as the machines can work inside as well as outside," says Chris Evans.
Through close consultation with Calor, the brewery decided to have bulk tank installations where usage was high. Chris Evans explains:
"Having bulk tank facilities greatly reduces the truck re-fuelling time to around three minutes and eliminates the need for our operators to manually handle individual cylinders."
