Calor Keeps Link Logistics on the Move

When you provide logistical support for one of the UK’s largest frozen food retailers you need a fleet of materials handling equipment that you can rely on - without the fear of being left out in the cold.

That’s why Link Logistics, one of the country’s largest third party distribution providers; relies on Calor, the UK’s largest supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to power its fleet of Linde forklift trucks.

When it comes to running a 24 hour logistics operation, no one in the UK is more experienced than Link Logistics. From its central England distribution hub in Solihull, West Midlands, Link provides logistical support for Farm Foods, handling and distributing approximately 30,000 cases of food every day to its retail outlets.

Integral to this logistics chain are the Calor powered, Linde forklift trucks, which are responsible for feeding the packing lines with pallets. Selected for their handling capabilities and 24 hour, seven days a week availability, the LPG fork trucks are ideal for outside yard work conditions.

Julian Hill, facilities manager explains: "We needed machines that could work outside and be able to operate comfortably over the uneven ground. The LPG trucks provide the flexibility and reliability needed for this 24 hour operation."

Calor LPG - the Cleaner Burning Fuel

Calor LPG - the Cleaner Burning FuelAny operation involving the handling of food must meet strict health and environmental requirements and the Link operation is no exception. Julian Hill opted to use Calor LPG, the cleaner burning fuel, to keep the whole operation as clean as possible.

"When handling sensitive products such as food, extra care and attention needs to be paid to ensure we meet the strict requirements," he says. "Using diesel would increase the risk of contamination, even though the trucks are outside, and electric machines can’t be used outside for prolonged periods."

Calor installed a 2,000 litre bulk tank at the Solihull site, where previously the machines were refuelled using 18kg exchangeable cylinders. Link, after close consultation with Calor, opted for bulk supply as a result of a cost per litre analysis. Also, using the bulk tank facility to refuel the forklift trucks eliminates the need for manual handling of the cylinders.

Julian Hill comments: "The tank provides a constant and more economical source of LPG. Calor instructed us on where to locate the tank and provided on site re-fuelling
training for all our operators."

He concludes: "The whole process of the installation reassures me that I am dealing with a professional market leader. The bulk tank facility makes the whole re-fuelling
process a lot quicker and easier."

Calor provides peace of mind

Using diesel would increase the risk of contamination - Julian HillCalor’s Commercial Specialist, Bob Peach says the benefits of running on LPG are clear. “LPG continues to grow as a preferred fuel within the food distribution sector as forklift truck fleet operators realise its advantages over diesel and electric. By working with Calor, the installation can be handled smoothly and efficiently with technical advice on hand to meet any business changes. Calor provides peace of mind, allowing customers to concentrate on their business.”

For added reassurance Calor takes complete responsibility of its tank maintenance providing a 24 hour, 365 day emergency call out service. In addition the delivery drivers carry out visual inspections every time the tank is refilled, a comforting feature in today’s health and safety conscious material handling industry. “The whole process of the installation reassures me that I am dealing with a professional market leader. The bulk tank facility makes the whole re-fuelling process a lot quicker and easier.”
